2027 Toyota Crown: What Changed, What Stayed, and What It Costs

Toyota's lift-up sedan gets a new hybrid system for 2027, and Kunes can walk you through all four grades.

The 2027 Toyota Crown keeps the lift-up sedan shape that set it apart and upgrades what sits underneath. The XLE, Limited, and Nightshade move to Toyota's fifth-generation hybrid system and gain paddle shifters, the Platinum keeps its 340-horsepower Hybrid MAX powertrain, and the Limited picks up a long list of standard tech. (This page covers the Crown sedan; the Crown Signia is a separate Toyota model.) Here is what changed, what carried over, and what each grade costs.

2027 Toyota Crown Changes vs. 2026

The big change is under the hood. The XLE, Limited, and Nightshade grades now use Toyota's fifth-generation hybrid system (THS 5), which pairs a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with front and rear electric motors and an electronically controlled brake system that coordinates regenerative and hydraulic braking. Toyota estimates 40 mpg combined for those grades, a little below the 2026 hybrid's ratings of 42 city and 41 highway, and Toyota has not published a horsepower figure for the new system. The same three grades gain standard paddle shifters to make the drive more engaging.

The styling changes are subtle. A newly sculpted rear bumper, satin-finish hybrid and AWD badges, and a new black paint called Inked are the main updates, and two-tone Platinum cars now get a body-color trunk under the black roof. The Platinum also adds red brake calipers and a black window surround, and the Nightshade adds black badge overlays.

The Limited grade gains the most. A Panoramic View Monitor, Traffic Jam Assist capability, and Digital Key capability are now standard, although Digital Key requires an active Remote Connect trial or subscription and Traffic Jam Assist requires Drive Connect. Saddle Tan also arrives, as full Saddle Tan seats on the Limited and a new interior option on the Platinum, and it pairs with the Bronze Age exterior color.

What Stayed the Same

The Crown keeps its elevated sedan profile and hammerhead front fascia, standard all-wheel drive on every grade, a MacPherson strut front and multilink rear suspension, standard 19-inch wheels, and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and 12.3-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Platinum's Hybrid MAX powertrain, with 340 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque, carries over unchanged.

2027 Toyota Crown Price by Grade

Base MSRPs exclude the $1,295 processing and handling fee, and all prices are subject to change. The Crown XLE starts at $41,640, the Nightshade at $48,965, the Limited at $49,720, and the Platinum at $55,190. Compared with 2026, the XLE, Nightshade, and Platinum each rose $200, while the Limited rose $3,770 and now includes tech that was previously optional.

Powertrains and Fuel Economy

Two powertrains cover the lineup. The XLE, Limited, and Nightshade use THS 5, a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with two electric motors and a continuously variable transmission, and Toyota estimates 40 mpg combined. The Platinum uses the Hybrid MAX powertrain, which pairs a 2.4-liter turbocharged engine with a six-speed direct-shift automatic transmission for 340 net combined horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque. Toyota's release does not list a fuel-economy rating for the Platinum.

All-Wheel Drive, Drive Modes, and Ride

Every 2027 Crown has standard all-wheel drive, delivered two ways. The XLE, Limited, and Nightshade use Electronic On-Demand AWD, which adds a rear-mounted electric motor to power the rear wheels when needed. The Platinum uses Full-Time Electronic AWD with an eAxle, which constantly adjusts power between the front and rear wheels. All four grades offer Normal, Eco, Sport, and Custom drive modes, and the Platinum adds a Rear Comfort mode that tunes the suspension for rear-seat passengers. Its Adaptive Variable Suspension and dynamic rear steering round out the sportier setup.
