The EVolution of Camping is Electrifying with eRVs!

Published on Jun 23, 2023 by Lisa Rouse

Lisa Talks to Logan Kraft from Cherokee RV About the All New, ALL-ELECTRIC 2023 Wolf Den 16EV

You’re hearing the term EV thrown around a lot these days.  The automotive industry is going EV crazy, with nearly every brand coming out with its own version of an electric vehicle.  Now entering the EV “race” is Forest River’s Cherokee brand and their all NEW Wolf Den 16EV.

Cherokee’s small, entry-level Wolf Pups have always been popular with first-time buyers and those looking for lightweight trailers. From the tiny 14CCW to the roomy rear bath 16FQ to the 17JW bunkhouse with a slide, and even the 18RJB toyhauler, Forest River Cherokee Wolf Pups cover the gambit when it comes to their customer’s needs. They took one of their most popular Wolf Pup floorplans, the 16BHS, and created the all-electric version with the Wolf Den 16EV. And you won’t have to wait to see one. It is available for pre-order now and will be hitting most dealership lots by mid-July of 2023.  The Cherokee Wolf Den 16EV is a surprise from front to back with an affordable (yes, we said affordable) price point.

Where is the rest of the RV industry when it comes to getting EV-RVs on the dealership lots? The RV industry, as a whole, is lagging behind the automotive industry with all electric eRVs by Winnebago and Thor still in concept stage with limited availability at select dealerships.

all-electric RV Airstream

Motorized EV-RVs are trying to overcome the challenges of weight, range and charging station availability en route to or in campgrounds, but the towable sector is starting to get on board.

Airstream has a concept trailer called the eStream. This all-electric RV trailer has an electric motor that drives the trailer’s axle, in certain situations, allowing the trailer to push itself and thus reduce the load on the tow vehicle. Those on the concept team claim that customers might be able to potentially go off the grid for days.

There are a couple of problems with the eStream trailer. The first is that it is still in the concept stage and most likely won’t be available for retail sale for another year or more. The second is the anticipated price point when these trailers finally do hit the market.

As a potential buyer, why would you want to consider an Electric RV travel trailer?

The first consideration is the price point.  This self-contained unit has all the features and amenities that the Cherokee brand is known for, with a price tag of around $14,995.

The second is ease of use.  By eliminating propane from the trailer, the consumer only needs to plug-in when arriving at the campsite to use everything in the trailer.  They will not have to turn on and off the propane tanks or even refill them when empty.

Those aren’t the only advantages to this trailer either.  With the elimination of the propane tanks, this camper is lighter weight than many units in its class, allowing more people to tow this trailer with their current vehicle.  Without the need to upgrade the tow-vehicle before they consider a camper purchase, more consumers will be able to experience the RV lifestyle and the great outdoors.

Cherokee has not missed the fact that people are more environmentally conscious these days either. The lower emissions that result from eliminating gas will help in the fight against climate change.

So, what does the consumer have to look forward to in these EV-RV trailers?  You will find a 13,500 BTU roof mounted AC unit and a 5,000 BTU fireplace replaces the propane-powered furnace.  Your kitchen is equipped with a the swiss-army knife of “microwaves” instead of a traditional oven/stove combination. This unit is a convection oven, air fryer, dehydrator and more! All of your cooking needs are taken care of with one appliance.  There is a 3.3 cu. ft. refrigerator and a pantry with pull-out bins to round out your kitchen.  There are two oversized bunks with storage underneath and a booth-dinette provides an additional sleeping spot when needed.

Outside you will find a power awning, walk-on roof, dual rear jacks and reflective solar-bronzed windows. All of these features are packed into a trailer that weighs less than 3,000 pounds.

Even better is, that unlike the EV trailers that are still in the concept stage, this trailer will be available at select Kunes RV locations by the end of June, 2023. You can get in touch with any of these dealers to reserve or pre-order the new Cherokee Wolf Den 16EV ev-RV today.
