Toys for Tots: Contributing to a Legacy of Giving

At Kunes, we are extremely excited and proud to share the news that five of our store locations will be actively participating in the commendable Toys for Tots initiative. This remarkable program holds a special place in our hearts, as it brings joy and smiles to children during the holiday season. Toys for Tots was started in Los Angeles by Marine Major Bill Hendricks. Bill organized a group of Marine reservists to collect over 5,000 donated toys from bins outside Warner Brothers movie theaters. Over the subsequent 75 years, the initiative grew significantly. In the 1950s, it received support from celebrities, including Walt Disney, and has continued to expand since then. 

In the 1960’s, professional sports teams started hosting events for Toys for Tots, a trend which has continued to this day. In 1970, 6 million toys were being collected and distributed annually. Toys For Tots has evolved from its origins as an exclusively Marine organization. Today, it operates with the involvement of Marine Corps League Detachments as well as local community organizations, all working together to collect and distribute toys. By 2016, Toys for Tots had collected and distributed over 512 million toys since 1947!

Kunes is proud to have five stores participating in Toys for Tots this year! You can drop off your donations at the previously mentioned locations. You can help us by donating new, unwrapped, toys in the Toys for Tots collection boxes at these five locations. While all donations are greatly appreciated, there is a huge need for gifts for kids between the ages of 7-12 and 13-17. We are accepting donations at these stores until December 5th.
